The Importance of Slowing Down

What does true luxury look like to you? Is it to have better quality possessions, or the ability to do more? We live in a time where nearly everything we can imagine is possible. And strangely, it’s made us more exhausted and overworked than ever before. On average, we make an estimated 35,000 decisions a day. No wonder we’re worn out.

Because of our noisy and overstimulating world, at Calabash we aim to be the antidote to “busy.” We have carefully curated our spaces to encourage a slower pace, one that you almost don’t realise you’ve truly slowed down. It simply becomes a natural process. When you are out of your natural habitat, your worries are less, your to-do list is less. And in this world, less is the truest form of luxury.

The importance of slowing down

Most living beings on this earth have a period of hibernation. But in our super-connected world, we seem to have lost this rhythm, and at great cost to us. The benefits of a slower pace lower not only stress levels and blood pressure, but your social interactions improve as you are more engaged in conversations. Being more attentive and aware of your surroundings, in turn, improves your interaction and short-term memory.

Less Decision Making

We don’t overburden our guests with a long list of treatments and activities to fill their calendars. The true beauty in your time at Calabash is in the unplanned. This is where the unexpected true rest and relaxation happens. We help keep your decision making to a minimum by looking after all your necessary needs, made possible by our housekeeping and food & beverage team who strive to be one step ahead in anticipating your needs.

Space to Breathe

Our spaces are designed to make the most of the beautiful outdoors, so that nothing else distracts you from the natural tropical surroundings. Only twenty minutes in nature allows you to unconsciously relax as your autonomic nervous system responds instantly to seeing greenery.

Endless horizons

At most points throughout our grounds and suites, we ensure that the sea can be seen. Looking at the horizon is known to relax your brain and eyes, activating the parasympathetic nervous system for calm, reducing stress, and offering mental clarity and a sense of spaciousness.

Simplified Menus

At Calabash, we house three restaurants. Though for the most part, all three restaurants aren’t running at the same time. This greatly reduces decision fatigue, as is often the case when it comes to meals. We mix up where dinners are located some evenings so that nothing becomes too repetitive either. We also pride our menus on being fresh, seasonal and locally inspired, but always familiar, so you don’t feel worlds away from your own. We ensure that our menus are daily changing, with longstanding favourites always included.

Calming Activities

We offer yoga and Pilates in the great outdoors on our jetty on the beach. The exposure to natural light whilst moving has multiple benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, and improvement in mood. There is also greater enjoyment and satisfaction from outdoor exercise, providing a mental break from everyday overstimulation.
